Nephi writes of the things of God—Nephi’s purpose is to persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham and be saved. About 600–592 B.C. Nephi writes about God—Nephi’s writes so that peole will believe in God and be saved.
About 600–592 B.C.
And now I, Nephi, do not give the genealogy of my fathers in this part of my record; neither at any time shall I give it after upon these plates which I am writing; for it is given in the record which has been kept by my father; wherefore, I do not write it in this work. 1 I am not going to write down my father’s genealogy because it is already included in his part of this book.
For it sufficeth me to say that we are descendants of Joseph. 2 Simply put:  We are descendants of Joseph of Egypt.
And it mattereth not to me that I am particular to give a full account of all the things of my father, for they cannot be written upon these plates, for I desire the room that I may write of the things of God. 3 I feel that it is OK to not repeat the things my father has written in his record – because I want to save room on these plates to write about God.
For the fulness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and be saved. 4 The only reason I am writing my story is to tell everyone to follow God and be saved.
Wherefore, the things which are pleasing unto the world I do not write, but the things which are pleasing unto God and unto those who are not of the world. 5 In this book I will not write things that will be enjoyed by people who reject God – but I will write things that please God.
Wherefore, I shall give commandment unto my seed, that they shall not occupy these plates with things which are not of worth unto the children of men. 6 For this reason I am leaving instructions for my descendants (who will also write on these plates that I have made) that they can only record things that are valuable to mankind.
