The smaller set of plates are a record of sacred teachings and events.
About 600–592 B.C.
|1 And all these things did my father see, and hear, and speak, as he dwelt in a tent, in the valley of Lemuel, and also a great many more things, which cannot be written upon these plates.||1 These things – and many others which I do not have room to include on these plates – were seen and heard and spoken by my father.|
|2 And now, as I have spoken concerning these plates, behold they are not the plates upon which I make a full account of the history of my people; for the plates upon which I make a full account of my people I have given the name of Nephi; wherefore, they are called the plates of Nephi, after mine own name; and these plates also are called the plates of Nephi.||2 About these plates I am writing on, these are different from the ones I’m using to write a full history of my people. I’ve named plates I’m using to record the history of my people “The Plates of Nephi.” The record you’re reading now, however, is also called “The Plates of Nephi.”|
|3 Nevertheless, I have received a commandment of the Lord that I should make these plates, for the special purpose that there should be an account engraven of the ministry of my people.||3 Regardless of the naming, I was commanded by the Lord to make these plates so that there could be a record of the revelations and spiritual teachings amongst my people.|
|4 Upon the other plates should be engraven an account of the reign of the kings, and the wars and contentions of my people; wherefore these plates are for the more part of the ministry; and the other plates are for the more part of the reign of the kings and the wars and contentions of my people.||4 On the other plates, the Lord told me to record the non-spiritual, public history of my people – things like the reign of kings, wars, and social events. In other words, the plates you are reading from now are the spiritual record, and the other plates are a strictly historical record.|
|5 Wherefore, the Lord hath commanded me to make these plates for a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not.||5 The Lord has commanded me to do this. I know He has a wise reason for this – but I do not know that reason.|
|6 But the Lord knoweth all things from the beginning; wherefore, he prepareth a way to accomplish all his works among the children of men; for behold, he hath all power unto the fulfilling of all his words. And thus it is. Amen.||6 I do know that the Lord knows all things from the beginning – and because of this He can do anything for His children. He has the power to do everything He promises. I know this to be true. Amen.|
